What are ChatGPT ads?
ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements from OpenAI that appear inside ChatGPT conversations, usually beneath the answer. Each one is labelled as sponsored and shows your business name, a short headline, a description, an image and a link. Retailers can also run product-feed ads that appear as shopping-style product cards and carousels.
Ads went live for UK users in June 2026 and are shown to logged-in adults on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Paid plans such as Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise stay ad-free. Instead of bidding on keywords, you describe the conversations your ad suits and OpenAI matches it to relevant topics.
Why advertise on ChatGPT?
People use ChatGPT to research, compare and plan before they buy. Ads let you appear during that research, not just at the final search, and the channel is still uncrowded.
Reach people while they research
Questions to ChatGPT are long and detailed, like 'best boiler for a three-bed semi on a budget'. Your ad appears alongside that kind of considered, high-intent question.
Get in before it's crowded
Most UK businesses haven't started yet. Early advertisers get to learn what works, build conversion data and refine their messaging while competition for placements is still relatively light.
Start with a modest budget
OpenAI has dropped its early six-figure minimums. Self-serve campaigns now run on daily budgets, so you can trial the channel without committing large sums up front.
Pay for the outcome you want
Buy on cost per click for traffic, cost per thousand impressions for reach, or use conversion-optimised bidding once tracking is in place and has enough data to learn from.
Show products, not just text
Retailers can connect a product feed so ChatGPT can show shopping-style cards and carousels with images and prices, which is ideal when people are asking for product recommendations.
Works alongside your other channels
ChatGPT ads sit well next to Google Ads and AI-search SEO. Together they cover people whether they search, scroll or ask an AI assistant for advice.
How ChatGPT ads work
Here's what you're actually buying, based on what OpenAI's Ads Manager offers UK advertisers today. Features are being added regularly, and we keep track so you don't have to.
Sponsored answer ads
A labelled unit beneath ChatGPT's reply with your name, logo, headline, description, image and link. Copy is short (headlines of around 16 characters), so every word matters.
Product feed ads
Upload your product feed and ChatGPT can show your products as cards or carousels with images, prices and ratings. Good for e-commerce stores with a well-kept catalogue.
Context, not keywords
You give OpenAI 'context hints' describing the conversations your ad is relevant to. There's no keyword list, so clear positioning and good landing pages do much of the work.
CPC, CPM or conversions
Choose clicks (CPC) or reach (CPM). With the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API installed, you can also optimise for conversions such as enquiries, sign-ups or sales.
Audiences and locations
Target by location, upload customer lists or exclude existing customers. In the UK, personalised targeting only reaches users who have opted in, so expect contextual ads to do most of the lifting.
How we manage your ChatGPT Ads
Same approach we've used across Google, Microsoft and paid social for over 20 years: clear goals, careful testing and regular, honest reporting.
- 01
Check it's a good fit
We look at your sector, offer and goals, and check OpenAI's ad policies for your industry. If ChatGPT ads aren't right for you yet, we'll say so and suggest a better use of budget.
- 02
Set up tracking properly
We set up your Ads Manager account, install the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API and handle consent, so every enquiry or sale can be measured. Without this, you're guessing.
- 03
Build your campaigns
We write tight ad copy, choose the context hints that match how your customers ask questions, and our in-house designers create images. Retailers get their product feed checked and cleaned up.
- 04
Test and optimise
We start with sensible budgets, test messages and audiences, and move spend towards what produces leads or sales. Our data-driven bid management is built by developers and PhD mathematicians.
- 05
Report and advise
You get regular, plain-English performance updates showing cost per result alongside your other channels, with recommendations on whether to scale up, adjust or pause.
Are ChatGPT ads right for you?
Great for
- Online shops with a clean product feed

Worth considering instead
If you're in a restricted sector (like gambling, alcohol, or regulated health, finance or legal outside OpenAI's approved advertisers) or need reliable volume now, Google Ads and our SEO & AI-Search work are usually the better starting point.
How Much Will It Cost?
Our management fee is a percentage of your ad spend, with a low minimum monthly fee. Your ad budget is paid directly to the platform and you stay in control of it.
Based on 11% of spend on ChatGPT Ads with a minimum fee of £99/month + VAT*
* There is an initial period of three months, then a monthly rolling contract thereafter. To discuss the service in more detail, call us on 01642 664550 or email sales@sayu.co.uk.
Yes. Ads started showing to UK users in June 2026, and OpenAI opened its self-serve Ads Manager (still labelled beta) to UK businesses shortly after. Some categories are restricted or need approval, and features are still being rolled out, so we'll check your eligibility before you commit any budget.
There are two separate costs. Your ad spend is paid directly to OpenAI; there's no minimum spend, only a small minimum daily budget, and you choose how much to spend. Our management fee is 11% of ad spend, with a minimum of £99 a month + VAT. After an initial three months it's a monthly rolling contract.
OpenAI says not. Its stated principle is that ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers, and sponsored units are kept separate from the response and clearly labelled. Paying for ads doesn't make ChatGPT recommend you in its answers. For that, you need strong organic AI visibility, which our SEO & AI-Search service covers.
Google Ads matches your ads to keywords people type and has years of proven data behind it. ChatGPT ads are matched to the context of a conversation, often earlier in someone's research. Google usually delivers more predictable volume today; ChatGPT is newer and worth testing alongside it, not instead of it.
Logged-in adults using ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. OpenAI doesn't show ads to accounts it identifies as under 18, and paid plans like Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise are ad-free. Ads also aren't shown next to sensitive conversations such as personal health, mental health or politics.
No. OpenAI doesn't share individual conversations with advertisers. You get aggregated reporting on impressions, clicks and conversions. In the UK, ads personalised using things like past chats or your customer data only reach people who've opted in; everyone else sees contextual ads based on the current conversation.
Honestly, it's too early for reliable UK benchmarks, and anyone promising specific returns is guessing. We treat it as a measured test: proper tracking, controlled budgets and clear reporting, so after a few months you'll know whether it's producing enquiries or sales at a cost that works for you.
