About XML sitemaps

Everything Google reads in a sitemap:

  • Whether robots.txt declares your sitemap
  • Sitemap indexes and every child sitemap (including .gz files)
  • Valid XML and the 50,000-URL limit per file
  • Duplicate URLs, URLs on other domains and http:// URLs
  • How fresh the <lastmod> dates are
  • A sample of listed pages — do they load with 200 OK?

Search engines can find pages by following links, but a sitemap makes sure they know about every page you want indexed — especially new pages, deep pages and big sites. Most website platforms create one for you.

A sitemap tells Google “these are my real pages”. Listing URLs that redirect or no longer exist wastes crawl time and makes the sitemap less trustworthy. List only the final, indexable version of each page.

Usually at /sitemap.xml. Wherever it is, add a “Sitemap:” line to robots.txt pointing at it, and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
