Google adds AI Mode checkout in Canada: what UK shops should prepare

AI search & retail

Shoppers in Canada can now buy inside Google's AI answers. UK online shops have a window to get their product data in order before the same feature arrives here.

What Google has announced

Google is extending direct checkout in AI Mode and the Gemini app to shoppers in Canada, as reported by Search Engine Journal. The feature runs on UCP, Google's protocol for letting shoppers complete a purchase from a merchant inside Google's own AI tools. Google also plans a Merchant Center integration next year, which should make it easier for retailers to take part.

In practice, a shopper can ask AI Mode for a product, compare options in the answer and pay without first visiting the shop's website. The sale still belongs to the retailer, but it can now happen on a Google screen.

Google has announced this for Canada only. It has said nothing about a UK launch, so any UK timing is a guess. Even so, UK retail teams are already planning for Black Friday, and this change could affect where future sales take place.

Why UK shops should pay attention now

AI answers already appear on many UK searches. Google showed an AI Overview on 70.3% of the 360 everyday UK searches checked in November 2026, according to Sayu's study. That figure comes from one month's sample of common searches, so treat it as a snapshot of that period. It shows how often UK shoppers already meet an AI answer before they meet a list of links.

Online shopping also matters to UK retail. Online accounted for 28.3% of UK retail sales in September 2026, up from 27.3% in September 2025, according to ONS figures cited in Sayu's study. These are single monthly readings, and they cover all online retail rather than sales made through AI tools.

If checkout inside AI Mode reaches the UK, Google will need to trust what a shop tells it about each product: price, stock, delivery, returns and how the shopper can pay. Shops whose product feeds match their websites exactly will be easier for Google to show and sell. The same care also helps today's Shopping ads, free listings and ordinary search results, so the effort pays off whatever happens next.

What this means for UK businesses

Nothing changes in the UK yet, and nobody needs to rebuild their checkout. The useful work is the same work that already helps shops sell through Google:

  • Keep your product feed accurate. Prices, stock and sale prices should match your website at all times, including during Black Friday promotions.
  • Make returns and delivery clear. State your returns window, costs and delivery options plainly on product pages and in Merchant Center.
  • Offer the payment options your shoppers expect. Check that the wallets and cards your customers use work smoothly at checkout on mobile.
  • Watch for a UK announcement. Follow Google's Merchant Center updates so you hear about any UK rollout or the planned integration early.
