How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK? A Plain-English Price Guide

SEO pricing guide

UK SEO is usually sold as a monthly retainer, and prices vary widely with your market, your website and how hard your searches are to win. Here is what drives the cost, what different budgets buy, and what to watch out for before you sign.

The Short Answer on SEO Pricing

Monthly retainers are the standard way to buy SEO in the UK. Prices vary because the work required depends on your market, your website, and how far you want to go. A local tradesperson competing in one town needs something very different from a retailer going head-to-head with national brands. That gap in scope is what makes seo pricing look confusing from the outside.

The cheapest SEO is rarely the best value. Judge it on what it brings in: the enquiries and sales you'd otherwise be paying Google for, one click at a time.

The Main Ways SEO Is Priced

Understanding the pricing models helps you work out which suits your situation before you speak to anyone.

Monthly Retainer

The most common arrangement. You pay a fixed fee each month and the agency works on your site continuously: optimising pages, building authority, producing content, monitoring performance. The benefit is momentum: SEO compounds over time, so sustained effort usually outperforms bursts. The downside is that you're committing to a recurring cost, and results don't arrive on day one.

Retainers suit businesses that want organic traffic as a long-term channel.

One-Off Audit or Project

An audit is a detailed review of your site (technical health, content gaps, link profile, keyword positioning) with a written set of recommendations. You then act on those recommendations yourself or hire someone to do it. This works well if you have an in-house team that needs direction, or if you want to understand the scale of the problem before committing to a retainer.

A project-based arrangement (for example, a site migration or a full content overhaul) sits in similar territory: defined scope, defined deliverable, then it ends.

Hourly or Day Rate

Some freelancers and consultants work this way. It suits one-off tasks, such as a technical review, a training session, a content audit of a specific section. It's less suited to ongoing SEO because the work lacks the continuity that the channel needs.

If budget is tight and your site's fundamentals are already sound, an experienced freelancer on a day rate can be excellent value. Be honest with yourself about whether you have the in-house capacity to execute what they recommend.

Local SEO Packages

A distinct category. If you serve customers in a specific area (a town, a city, a region) and your goal is to appear in Google's local results and Maps, local SEO is a more focused and typically lower-cost service than national campaigns. It concentrates on your Google Business Profile, local citations, reviews, and location-relevant content. You can find out more on our local SEO services page.

What Drives the Cost of SEO

Competition in Your Market

A solicitor in a large city competes against dozens of well-funded firms, many of whom have been investing in SEO for years. A joiner in a market town faces far less. The more authoritative your competitors' sites, the more work is required to close that gap, and then overtake it.

One way to see what a search is worth is to look at what advertisers pay Google for a single click on it. Every visit you win organically for searches like these is a click you are not paying for:

Ranking for "emergency plumber", for example, means around 12,100 searches a month where competitors are paying about £17.34 a click. That is the value good SEO builds, and why competitive markets cost more to win.

Site Size and Technical State

A well-structured site with 50 pages needs less remedial work than a 10,000-page e-commerce site with duplicate content, slow load times, and broken internal linking. The initial audit and fix phase on a large or neglected site can account for significant early effort.

Local, National, or International Scope

Targeting one location is simpler than targeting the whole UK. Targeting multiple countries involves localisation, hreflang implementation, and often separate content strategies per market. Each layer of geographic complexity adds to the scope.

Content and Digital PR

For competitive keywords, links from other credible websites remain an important ranking signal. Earning those links usually requires content worth linking to (research, tools, guides) and outreach to relevant publishers. This is called digital PR, and it can be a substantial part of a campaign budget for anyone targeting genuinely competitive terms.

AI Search and AI Overviews

This is a newer part of the scope. Google's AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT now surface answers drawn from web content, and appearing in those responses requires a different kind of optimisation: structured data, authoritative topical coverage, and content that answers questions clearly. Any serious SEO campaign in 2024 and beyond should address this. If you want to understand where your brand stands in AI-generated results, our free AI visibility report is a good starting point.

How Fast You Want Results

Attempting to accelerate results (through more content, more outreach, more technical resource) costs more. There's no way to shortcut Google's trust signals, but you can invest more to produce more of the right signals, faster.

What You Should Expect at Different Price Points

The figures below are ours (Sayu's packages) presented as one worked example of what different monthly investments buy. They're not "the market rate"; other agencies price differently based on their own cost structures and what they include.

All of our SEO packages cover traditional organic search and AI search, and run for an initial six months before moving to one month's notice. Prices are per month plus VAT.

Essentials: £495/month Suited to smaller sites and less competitive markets. Covers the core: technical fixes, on-page optimisation, keyword tracking, monthly reporting. A sensible entry point if you're starting from scratch or testing the channel.

Foundation: £895/month Adds more content production and broader keyword targeting. Right for businesses in moderately competitive sectors, or those who want to move faster than the entry tier allows.

Growth: £1,295/month Where active link acquisition and more substantial content strategy come in. Appropriate for businesses in competitive markets or those with national ambitions.

Authority: £1,695/month Increased output on content and digital PR. Suited to sectors where the top-ranking sites have strong backlink profiles and high domain authority.

Market Leader: £1,995/month The full programme: maximum content, proactive digital PR, broader AI search coverage. For businesses where organic search is a primary revenue channel and they want to dominate it.

Local SEO: £295/month One target location. Initial three-month period. Covers Google Business Profile optimisation, local citations, review strategy, and location-relevant on-site work. See the full details on our local SEO services page.

If you're weighing SEO against paid search, it's worth looking at both side by side. Our SEO and PPC management page sets out how the two channels work together, and how the costs compare over time.

Here is how our own packages are priced, as one worked example:

Red Flags to Watch For

Guaranteed rankings. No agency controls Google's algorithm. Anyone who guarantees a specific position for a specific keyword within a fixed time is making a promise they cannot keep.

Very cheap link packages. Links from low-quality or irrelevant sites can actively harm your rankings. Packages sold on volume are a liability.

No reporting. You should receive regular, clear reports showing what has been done and what has changed: rankings, traffic, conversions. If a provider can't tell you what they're doing or why, that's a problem.

Long lock-ins with no review point. A 12-month contract with no break clause or review point mainly protects the agency. A fair arrangement gives you a clear initial period, long enough for the work to show results, followed by a shorter notice period.

How Long Before You See Results

Realistic timescales for SEO depend on where you're starting from. A site with no existing authority in a competitive market might need six months before rankings move meaningfully, and twelve months before the traffic impact is clear. A site that already ranks for related terms, or that's competing in a less contested space, can see movement sooner.

The metric to track is not rankings alone. A position-one ranking for a keyword that no one searches is worthless. Focus on organic sessions, enquiry form submissions, phone calls attributed to organic traffic, and revenue from those leads. Rankings are a leading indicator; those business outcomes are the actual measure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

It depends on whether people search for what you sell. If your customers use Google to find businesses like yours, ranking well for those searches is a sustainable source of leads that doesn't stop working the moment you pause spend. For very local or niche businesses, local SEO at a lower monthly cost often delivers a strong return. For some businesses with very small audiences or very short sales cycles, paid search may be quicker to test.

Why is there a minimum initial term?

SEO takes time to show results. A one-month commitment doesn't give the work long enough to bed in, and it means neither party can judge whether the approach is working. A six-month initial period is the minimum realistic window to see meaningful data. After that, a monthly notice period is fair: if the results aren't there, you can leave.

Is local SEO cheaper than national SEO?

Generally, yes. The scope is narrower: one location, one Google Business Profile, and local competition only. That's why a dedicated local SEO service can be priced lower than a full national campaign. If your business genuinely serves a single area, there's no point paying for national coverage.

Can I just pay for a one-off audit?

Yes, and it can be a sensible first step. An audit tells you what's holding your site back and what needs fixing. If you have developers and writers in-house who can action the recommendations, you may not need an ongoing retainer straight away. The honest caveat is that an audit report without implementation doesn't move rankings. The value is in acting on it.

How do I know if my SEO agency is doing a good job?

Regular reporting is the baseline. Beyond that, look at whether organic traffic is growing, whether the keywords you care about are moving, and (most importantly) whether that traffic is converting into enquiries or sales. A good agency will report on those business outcomes and talk them through with you.
