Shopify moves AI agent facts into admin: check them before Black Friday

Shopify & AI agents

Shopify merchants can now manage what AI shopping agents say about their shop from inside the admin — and with Black Friday approaching, out-of-date policies or missing facts could mean a chatbot inventing a returns window during the busiest week of the year.

What has changed

Search Engine Journal reports that Shopify's AI agent knowledge base now lives in the merchant admin. This is the set of facts about a shop that AI shopping agents can draw on when they answer a shopper's questions. Examples include how returns work, how delivery is handled and how to get in touch.

Two details matter most for merchants. First, policies and contact details now publish by default. Second, some merchants who used an app to manage these facts may need to re-add them in the new admin area.

For most shops this is a sensible tidy-up. Having the facts in one place inside the admin makes them easier to find and keep current. The practical risk is small but real. A shop could end up telling AI agents something out of date, or something that no longer matches its own pages. Facts that were set up through an app could also have dropped out during the move without anyone noticing.

Why the facts should match your visible pages

A separate Search Engine Journal opinion piece raises a wider point. It describes a "shadow web" of information that brands give to AI tools but keep off their own websites. It compares this with cloaking, the old practice of showing search engines something different from what visitors see. It asks why an AI search provider would keep trusting information that a brand hides from its own site.

This is the author's view of where things could go. It does not describe how any AI provider treats this information today. Still, the advice that follows from it is simple and low-risk. Whatever you tell AI agents should already be on your site, in words shoppers can read.

That also protects you with customers. Suppose an AI agent tells a shopper they have a long window to return an item, but your returns page says something shorter. You now have an unhappy customer and an awkward conversation. When the knowledge base and the site say the same thing, that problem goes away.

What this means for UK businesses

  • Open the new knowledge base in your Shopify admin. Look at exactly what is set to publish, especially the policies and contact details that now go out by default.
  • Compare it line by line with your live site. Returns, delivery and contact details should say the same thing in both places.
  • Re-add anything that went missing. If you managed these facts through an app before, check that nothing was lost in the move.
  • Keep AI agents to what your pages already say. If a fact is worth telling an AI agent, put it on your site first.
  • Do it before Black Friday. Changes to delivery cut-offs or seasonal returns rules are easy to update on the site and forget in the admin.
