Ecommerce Sales Set To Boom!!

Author: Julie Phan
By 2013 the UK will arrive at £31.2 billion in online sales, as predicted by Verdict Research. This will signify a rise in retail spending where the internet will be responsible for 10% of all retail spend by 2013. It is predicted that ecommerce sales will increase by 13.3% in 2009 and that £20.9 billion is predicted to be spent on online purchases by consumers this year alone.

The reasons behind this observation comes from the fact that consumers are spending more and more time online because it is better for finding items at lower prices than the high streets. The internet is also easily accessible particularly for specific items, so it clearly offers convenience and better value for consumers.

Even though affluent consumers account for 56.8% of all online shopping, as reports by Verdict Research show, they believe that those less affluent high street shoppers will deviate from the high street and become avid online consumers since more and more online retailers offer free home delivery and broadband access becomes more available.

It is clear that the internet is becoming increasingly appealing to consumers. Matthew Piner, retail analyst at Verdict Research and report co-author, explains:

"With its clear price advantage over the traditional bricks and mortar channel, online will become even more attractive to recession-hit shoppers as they venture back to buying big ticket items,"

Currently Amazon.co.uk is the most popular site in the UK followed by Argos and Play.com. And with the increase of shoppers turning to the internet it will only help to boost ecommerce sales.
