Online Retailers Need To Offer More Payment Options

Author: James Lees
About 40% of online shoppers are more likely to purchase items if more than one payment option is available on their website. A recent survey commissioned by ClickandBuy and performed by YouGov shows that out of 2,000 UK web users, 40% agree that they are more likely to buy from an e-commerce site if more than one payment method is available.

By providing alternatives to credit or debit card payments it is suggested that e-commerce sites will catch more customers. Many high street retailers that now offer shopping online don’t seem to be following suit and adding services like PayPal to their e-commerce sites in order to allow users to pay with their preferred payment type. Boots and Burton are among a few of the high street retailers that actually have a large range of payment options. Maplin, the large electronics store actually accepts PayPal on their website.

Over 80% of online users also think that online fraud is increasing as more and more people use the internet to make payments online. Of the 32% of adults surveyed who do not regularly shop online, 54% said that this is because they are concerned about the security risks of entering credit card details online, so clearly offering alternative payment options is one way for retailers to deal with these fears. Providing information about their secure servers, offering the option for payments over the phone and of course providing as much information as possible, are just some of the ways in which e-commerce sites can help their customers feel safe while using their website to shop online.

A lot of online users will actually cancel their purchase if their preferred method of payment isn’t available to them. It’s always best to ensure that you consider all possibilities so that you can maximise sales in your chosen market.
