Google Adwords Lifts Gambling Ad Restrictions in the U.K.

Since Friday 24th October gambling websites were allowed to advertise on Google Adwords. By reversing the ban on all forms of gambling-related websites, which came into effect in 2007, gambling websites will be able to pay Google to appear against search results aimed at users within the UK.

The new advertising policy allows any advertiser within the European economic area to purchase ads and serve them to UK users, given they have the necessary license to do so*. The ads will not appear when the "safe search" family filter is switched on and they will only appear in search results pages (not on Google's content network).

At the moment Google say they have no plans to relax its policies in other regions, telling Clickz news: "The U.K. seemed like a sensible place to start," explaining the acceptance of gambling related advertising within British culture.

* The new policy states that the advertiser must be registered with the Gambling Commission and provide a valid operating license number. Non-UK advertisers (that are within the European Economic Area) must be licensed in their respective country.
